September 2005

I’m sorry. I do not have plans to see either Serenity nor Mirrormask this weekend. My deep abiding hatred for people in crowds just way outweighs my need to be geeky.

I am officially on vacation next week but could not get organized enough to actually go anywhere, so perhaps I will take in matinee.

style resistance

September 30, 2005

in Meta

Ye gods, Movable Type’s 3.2 style sheets are complicated. I’ve spent the last couple of days restyling my blog as part of a giant combo workover of everything that may eventually see the light of day — yes, I do have a development machine now, so I am not continually messing up the live blog. I have a design that I like now but its still built around the existing MT CSS and there’s like 800 lines of extraneous complex stuff in here that I don’t need. Plus: hardcoded widths and font sizes. ew.

I’m torn. On the one hand I could strip down the style sheets to about a quarter of what’s there and have much cleaner and simpler code that was easier to change and maintain, but then I’d end up forked from MT and I’d probably eventually have to come back and restart from the defaults again some time in the future (which is what I’m doing now after taking that step with my initial MT 2.x install).

On the other hand, the CSS people at MT actually know what they are doing. I know CSS reasonably well at this point, but I am not up on the multitude of cross-browser hacks and workarounds so I’m opening myself up to lots of bugs and issues and worry down the line. If I stuck with the existing style sheets I could have some confidence of not having to deal with that and, more importantly, I could just go on with my life.

I think I’ll have a couple cups of coffee and think about it. (it’ll take less time if I’m caffeinated).

Update: I know you’ve been anxiously awaiting my decision. I merged and cut everything down. Yes, its true: I am forked.

overheard

September 28, 2005

in Personal, Stories

I was in South Park on monday (the neighborhood in SF, not the cartoon), on my way to my hairdresser’s. And a nice young well dressed couple were walking along the sidewalk toward me. Her: pale, blonde, impeccably dressed, really nice shoes. Him: black, stunningly handsome. Young urban lawyers or marketing or bizdev, moving up in the world. As they passed, I overheard her state emphatically:

“No, no, its not true, I get laid there all the time.”

Did I turn around and follow them to find out what that conversation was all about? No I did not. Its been bugging me ever since. All the time? *all* the time? Where is this? What’s not true? Arrrgghhh!

Dammit, it really is true that marketing is just one big drunken sex party and only the beautiful people are invited, isn’t it.

real giant squid pics!

September 28, 2005

in Cephalopods, Links

I did see the headlines for the giant squid pics going by in my newsreader yesterday, but I numbly thought yeah yeah, giant squid, blah blah. Giant squid have been washing up on beaches for years now. Everyone knows the cool thing to watch out for these days is the colossal squid. Giant squid are so last century.

But thanks to no less than THREE astute readers I was disabused of my misunderstanding. This is not yet another giant squid carcass. These are pictures of the live animal in the sea. No one’s seen the critter alive, let alone photographed it before now. It’s at least 25 feet long and the Japanese researchers pulled the long tentacles off of it while they were baiting and photographing it, which enabled them to verify that it was indeed the right species. They also comment that the giant squid is “a much more active predator than previously suspected.”

Eeeeee! Bad childhood 20,000 Leagues flashbacks!

beyond dude!

September 27, 2005

in Personal, Tech

My ISP has been tuning the antennas this afternoon, and things have been… kind of zippy. I ran a speed test and just had to put up this screen shot.

How fast is my broadband? It is beyond dude fast.

(this was, alas, short-lived. They finished tuning the antennas and things dropped back down to merely fast fast. Still. It was breathtaking for a while there. Have I mentioned recently how much I like high speed wireless?).
