Oh crap. I was just about to head down there for a part! I can never remember the name of the place either but it is just how you described it.
A few months ago my refrigerator died (again). I sussed out it was the evaporator fan and took it into this place. The guy told me I could replace it with the same (plastic cased) one again and have it fail again, or use this other one which looked as though it came of an industrial freezer which was also half the price but which would never fail again. Ever. Well I took the guy's advice and apart from the slightly alarming noise the fridge now makes it has been rock-solid reliable.

Perhaps he started making more money with the personal advice?

That's so sad. No, not that you fixed your furnace - that's great! I'm impressed. But I hate when little stores close up, particularly when it's unexpected, and you arrive and it's just gone.

I, too, have a store in a strip mall called "Appliance Parts" that is staffed by an older guy who knows everything. They do not, however, stock parts for an Airstream appliance. But he's always on the phone when I go in, too. Must be a chain of them.

They also don't stock parts for a Bissell Pro Heat carpet cleaner. But I did find another parts store in North Jackson who is very good. I walked in, said I need a belt for a Bissell Pro heat, and he said, "the smooth one or the toothed one?"

Hail the methody little appliance men.

There is a hardware store near my house that is like your old appliance store. Everything stacked up in barely-controlled chaos. The old guys there know every screw and tool and where everything is. The place is legend among the hardware cogniscenti.

And of course the guy would like you. I'm sure you look quite fetching standing there holding a part from a broken appliance.
