I shrieked with glee for ages over this — not so much because of the caption but because that’s a fifteen year old picture of me. gremlynna on livejournal dragged it up out of some web archive somewhere and pasted it up into an lolgoth.

This has made my WHOLE YEAR.

I was in my local Borders Books this morning, and perhaps this sign has been there the whole time and I just didn’t notice, or perhaps its a new sign, but none the less, there is a “Popular Fiction” sign over the SF, mystery, and romance sections now.

• If there is going to be an event at work where there might be co-workers there who might take your picture and put it up on flickr, consider wearing eye makeup.

Summer is pesto season. Every year I grow a whole lot of big-leaf basil just for making loads and loads of pesto. Some for eating, some for freezing, just so we can have pesto year round.

Last week I harvested a big load of basil and was cleaning it in the sink when suddenly one of the basil leaves wiggled at me.

This very large green bug had stowed away on the basil I had harvested. The camouflage was perfect; the bug is precisely the same color as the basil.

I of course maneuvered the bug to a better location so I could take pictures and then let him go.

The one nice thing about the depths of darkest winter is that you can be awake when the killer sunrise happens.

You can tell it is truly winter in California when the banana slugs come out.

Somehow it just isn’t the same as the first snow, is it. At least I don’t have to shovel banana slugs.

It really sucks to get up at 5AM in the dark to go to spin class, do the class, lift some weights, stretch a little, chat with friends, take a shower, get dressed, leave the gym and IT’S STILL DARK.

argghhhh.

Friday is cat blogging day. It is! Really!

This is Elsa, my old cat. She is 14. She’s the same cat I posted about with health problems earlier, although she’s doing OK now.

She looks sort of sad in this picture, although what that expression really says is “You have not given me any cheese yet today, and I hate you. Now I will be forced to puke in your shoes.”

Update (April 2005): Since I posted this picture last year Elsa has become wildly popular on the Intarnets. Her photo is now #2 on Google Image Search, and that grey cat in #1 is going down any day now, I just know it. This photo now accounts for more than half of the hits on this web site — mostly, as far as I can tell in my logs, from adoring fans on web forums.

But I am very sad to have to post that Elsa died earlier this month from stomach cancer. She was the best cat and she lived a very long and rich life.

Thanks to everyone who has linked to her; I really had no idea that anyone would find her as pretty as I did.
